When you are intensively caring for a newborn, you have to have a level head, but be ready to act fast because anything could happen in the blink of an eye. Being a nurse to such a tiny, fragile, or ill little human is a difficult career choice because you never know what the outcome of that baby's life will be. For instance: when you have to go to a family and make them aware that things just don't seem to be going the way you would like them too, it can be VERY unnerving for the family of that child. Having their baby in the NICU to begin with is an unbelievably difficult situation to be in, not to mention things going bad. In situations like this is just best to sit back be caring, loving and show some sympathy, but most of all put your own personal feelings aside, and listen.
Now for some PROS. Seeing a sick infant come into your unit is heart breaking because if we all had it our way there would not be a single sick baby born into this already sick world. However, after that babies stay and rehabilitation, being able to see that baby be taken right back out those doors,in the loving arms of its family, and on its way home is one of the most rewarding parts of being a nurse for these tiny little ones. Especially when they are as healthy as they can be.
